This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.’ Our sceptred isle has much for which to thank William Shakespeare, from the words and phrases he introduced into the language to his timeless plots and memorable characters. Marking 400 years since the publication of Shakespeare’s First Folio, this issue we look back at the Bard’s remarkable legacy (All the World’s a Stage, p41). Truth is stranger than fi ction, as the saying goes, and the twists and turns in Hever Castle’s history certainly bear this out. Following exciting new fi ndings, we tell Hever’s story (Castle of Queens, p30).
Elsewhere this issue, we don gown and bonnet for a promenade with the fashion-conscious Georgians (Undressing the Georgians, p23) and stitch together the patchwork history of Scotland’s favourite cloth (Telling tartan tales, p66).
