As computer musicians we are probably more willing to embrace the future than other creative types, and by using some of the features in our DAWs, we have already been dabbling with rudimentary (or not) forms of artificial intelligence. But this issue we’re going deeper than that and exploring some of the software that is set to – or already does – take even more of the strain out of music making. (Like we’re getting that sweaty making music in Live, Logic, Cubase et al.) A.I. seems to be breathing down our necks in many aspects of life but in music production it promises tomix, master, even create your tunes and beats for you. OK, we’re not talking about a terrifying future where HAL 9000 forces us to make 1990s happy hardcore until we die (although there are worse ways to go, to be fair) – this is more software to make suggestions and nudge us in certain directions.
We become more decision-makers in the process rather than curators, and whether that is the kind of music producer you want to be is, of course, entirely up to you. A.I. isn’t something you need to embrace in production but it’s getting better and more useful.
So, time for us all to embrace it? Let’s give it a go, I say. Or do I? “Open the Logic DAW, HAL.” “I’m sorry Andy, I’m afraid I can’t do that.” “HAL, I won’t argue with you anymore! Open the DAW!” “Andy, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.”
