Return to the land that time forgot

Aydreaming has long been one of my favourite hobbies. I remember on camping holidays in France as a boy, spending long journeys looking at the forest and mountains and wondering to myself “How would this have all looked before humans came along?”
These days, whenever I see a plant or animal that was around in prehistoric times, it makes my heart race a little faster. I had the experience recently while walking through the Devon countryside with my dad, looking at unravelling ferns.
Maybe that’s why turtles have always been one of my favourite animals, creatures so ancient that they seem infused with some kind of otherworldly magic. Tui De Roy’s photos of leatherbacks in Trinidad (p54) offer an evocative glimpse back in time, to a world before we came along.
