As much as I love my job, I do enjoy daydreaming about how I’d spend my time if I didn’t have to work. I reckon I’d spend much of it gardening. I find plants endlessly fascinating, and nurturing them and watching them grow gives me immense pleasure. But as much as I enjoy horticulture, what really fascinates me is to see them in the wild. I grew up on the edge of Exmoor, and watching the moors change colour over the seasons taught me that plants control the ecosystem. But when I first ventured into the Amazon I was knocked for six. The sheer volume and variety of plantlife there is incredible – at the risk of overdoing the understatement, there’s just so much life there! From spring, I find Gardeners’ World
