FIVE HUNDRED
From 1980 to today – and beyond.
In June last year APC celebrated 40 years in print. Today, we’re passing through the lovely big issue number 500. Our next major milestone will be our 50th birthday.
These are truly awesome and humbling achievements, and the credit for making it this far is spread far and wide, and well into the past. All of the current and former staff deserve a slice of this cake. To our current main squad: Joel, Troy, Shaun, Chris, Nick, David, Cam, Mark and Darren – thank you for your ongoing amazing work. Plus of course the behind the scenes team, without whom we’d be in a hopeless mess. A small army brings you APC, and they’re all champions.
I had the enormous pleasure of speaking with many of the last couple of decade’s APC writers and editors as we put together the 40th anniversary issue – and that included a very special page writen by our first editor Sean Howard.
But for this extra special issue I turned to two people in particular to help tell the story of the PC and APC through the ages from a different angle. Jeremy White was APC’s editor through most of the 1990s, which was a pivotal time for both the PC and this magazine. his word into this issue take us back to the emerging internet in a compelling and beautifully told story. And, telling the longer story of the complete history of the mag and the machine, long-timer Darren Yates – who began back in the Jeremy White era – weaves a tale of the decades-long evolution of the PC and how we covered it. Chris added a timeline of the PC’s most impactful moments and it all serves to remind us that the machine sitting in front of us today really is something incredible.
Many of our friends across the PC industry also sent their congratulations, and there’s some big names here that shared their best wishes.
To bookend these stories, we have a terrefic feature impending new technologies and products that will shape the PC for the next few years.
Every one of you though, our dear readers, ultimately makes our long life possible, and we truly do thank you for your ongoing support. To the readers of the past we are honoured to have played some part in quenching your thirst for PC knowledge. To those new to APC, we promise to give you the insight and understanding that made Apc magazine great. Onwards!
