As this issue of World Soccer Magazine went to press, the Spanish federation took the bold decision, on the eve of the World Cup, to sack coach Julen Lopetegui following the announcement of his appointment as the next coach of Real Madrid. As we look back on an eventful European club season, the story of the month should have been the decision by Zinedine Zidane to quit after leading Madrid to a remarkable third successive European Cup, their 13th in all. Instead, the European champions – and their president Florentino Perez in particular – fi nd themselves under fi re for the “arrogance” of giving the Spanish federation just fi ve minutes notice before announcing Lopetegui’s appointment to the world – and then presenting their new man at a press conference shortly after the World Cup’s opening game. The affair says a lot about the fragile balance between club football and the international game. By the time you read this, the World Cup will have kicked off in Russia. In our next issue we’ll review every single game from what we all hope
will be a memorable tournament.See you then.
