Who Do You Think You Are – September 2021
English | 94 pages | pdf | 59.23 MB

With one child at university and my youngest about to start his final year at school, it might look like my family are coming to the last years of their education, but learning continues throughout our lives.
So this month, we’re hoping to encourage all of you to try out some of the fantastic educational opportunities on offer for family historians. From one-hour tutorials to postgraduate qualifications, there’s plenty to choose from and by way of inspiration on page 18 we’ve asked tutors from a range of courses to share a favourite tip with our readers.
We’re also marking the publication of a major new dictionary of surnames with an article by the editor about how family names have developed and the changes we can look out for as family historians (see page 24). For those of you with Irish heritage we look at the extraordinary collection of records of petty sessions that have survived and are free to search (see page 52), and if you are researching Scottish roots you will be delighted by the vast index that has recently been added to Findmypast (see page 9). If you include our guide to Welsh websites (page 47) and the 1901 census (magazine page 79) we’ve got the UK covered.
As always, thank you to everyone who has written in to share their stories this month. You are an inspiration to us all. Happy hunting
