Stretch All Day – Prevention USA Magazine July 2023
THE DAY BEFORE I talked to Kathi Ross- Nash, the author of Prevention’s new book Stretch Away Pain, I sat on a plane for six hours. That morning, I went for a run and then sat down for another six hours to catch up on all that I’d missed during my vacation.
So as Kathi was telling me about the importance of regular movement in our lives, I knew she was wise, but that I had not been. When it comes to moving through your life with a healthy body that’s free of pain, “30 to 45 minutes at the gym is not going to cut it,” she said. “It’s not what you do in the studio,” she explained, referring to a studio for Pilates, which is her area of expertise. “It’s what you take with you throughout your day.”
Sure enough, when I got up after our call I had to shuffle and groan my way into the kitchen to get a glass of water. Normally I’m a little better about moving regularly, if only because when I’m at home my dog makes sure I get up and when I’m at the office I’m running around to meetings. But talking to Kathi— and reading her book, which we’ve excerpted starting on page 30— was a reminder of the power of being intentional about movement.
The book is packed with stretches you can learn easily and do anywhere. And you should, because based on her 35-plus years working with people in pain, Kathi says she can tell who does their “homework”: The ones who add stretching and movement into their days are the ones who feel the best in their bodies.
I’m writing this standing up, doing a couple of roll-downs and genie twists to make up for yesterday a little bit. And Kathi, I’ll keep doing my homework—I promise!
