Welcome at Photoshop User Magazine December 2021 issue
It’s here! Welcome to my (and I can’t believe I’m even about to say this number) “16th Annual Holiday Photo Gear Guide” issue. Of course, there are lots of tutorials and articles here in the magazine, but along with all that cool stuff, I share some of my favorite holiday gift ideas for all sorts of budgets, from inexpensive stocking stuffers to gifts for the Wall Street hedge fund manager on your list.
It starts on page 63, so dig right in and get to shoppin’. Since our last magazine issue, I hope you’ve had a chance to get up to speed on all the new masking features in Lightroom and Photoshop’s Camera Raw. These are really game-changing features and they’re getting loads of love from the community all over the web. My online course on learning these new features is one of our most-watched courses of the year, and there’s been lots of great interaction in the KelbyOne Community forums.
If you haven’t caught this new course yet, here’s the link. I think you’ll be impressed with what Adobe has been able
to do with masking; there’s lots of stuff I never thought I’d see in Lightroom or Camera Raw. Speaking of our Community forums, I was nudged by a comment I saw there recently where one of our members mentioned watching a class I taught nearly six years ago, and that was my Just One Flash course. The year it was released, it was our number-one, most-watched course, and he noted in the Community how much he got out of the course. As I was reading his comments, though, I was thinking two things: First, “I can’t believe it’s been nearly six years since I did that course.” I just couldn’t believe it. It felt like two years, tops (apparently, I’ve lost a grasp of time). The second thing was, “I have newer, easier, and better ways to teach how to use just one flash now!” Of course, that led to my calling our video department and blocking out some time to redo the course from scratch, teaching it the way I would today. So I’ve been heads-down, working on the new improved version of that course. It should be out in a few weeks or so but, depending on our holiday schedule, it might get bumped to the first of the year, but I’m hopeful. Speaking of hopeful (repetitive, lame segue attempt), I have two books on press right now, but both are victims of the current supply-chain issues. I’m hoping at least one of them makes it out in time for the holidays. The first book is a totally new one I’m really excited to get out there. It’s called The Travel Photography Book and, well, the title pretty much says it all. While the print edition doesn’t look like it’s going to make it until January (be sure to leave something on those Amazon gift cards you’ll probably be getting this year), the eBook version is available now.
The other book is a major update to my bestselling Lightroom book, The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic Book, the one that covers everything from start to finish. I was able to get all the new Lightroom masking features included in this new edition, and my publisher swears the print edition will be here for the holidays, but it’s just
up to the printer, and the shipping, and the warehouse, and the supply chain and, well, I’m keeping my fingers crossed. (Amazon shows it will be in stock in December; seems a bit tight, but again, I’m hopeful.)
One of the main parts of my job (and one that’s the most fun) is working on the curriculum for KelbyOne, everything from which courses we’ll be doing to which instructors we’ll be working with (and I work closely with our wonderful in-house producer, Christina Sauer, and of course, Erik Kuna). We have some really amazing new courses coming in 2022. It’s some of our best stuff yet, and I can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on for the coming year.
As we bring this year to a close, I’m very optimistic for where things are headed as we begin to get our pandemic lives behind us. Hopefully, we can get back to doing live
events and workshops, and to seeing many of you in person again. I miss that so much.
Thank you for your continued support this year. It means more to us than you could know. We’re honored that you picked us to be your education partner and that you’ve come along with us on this journey. Here’s wishing you a safe, happy, and healthy holiday season and a prosperous new year!
All my best,
