Welcome Men’s Health Australia Magazine December 2021 Issue

While in the early stages of pulling together our final issue for 2021, I had a dream. Not, unfortunately, in the Martin Luther King Jnr sense – this was a night-time vision that struck with such realism that it left me fretting for hours after awakening.
In said dream, my teeth fell out. I could feel my lips wrap around my bare gums, settling into the little grooves where my ivories should have been. It was like being a toddler again, tonguing the gap where a baby tooth fell out, yet on a much grander (and more horrifying) scale.
Following a moment of dreamy relief at being released from the shackles of eternal brushing and flossing, a panic set in, strong enough to wake me from my slumber. What could it mean?
Luckily, our deputy editor, Ben Jhoty, was working on this month’s feature story on dreams (p72), and he was able to turn that morning’s editorial meeting into a faux-therapy session. As it turns out, dreams of losing your teeth can signify great loss or significant life change. And while loss is rarely ideal, the prospect of change is something that can always elicit excitement in the corridors of Men’s Health.
“You’ve changed.” Two words often thrown like darts by ex-lovers and estranged acquaintances, and yet should they really be so wounding? If you’re able to view change from the right perspective, then, well, what a compliment! Why would you ever want to stay the same – stagnant and directionless, never learning from your experiences . . . or your mistakes?
For too long we’ve resisted changes that would help both individuals and their societies. Thankfully, the past decade has given rise to seismic shifts in our conceptions of health, masculinity and various cultural paradigms, so in this month’s issue we celebrate progress and those who embody it. Why? Because we must in order to better ourselves as men, especially in this, the age of ‘cancel culture’.
Cancel culture is a toxic phenomenon. If we are going to call out men for poor behaviour, we must first believe and accept that they are capable of change. If we don’t, then men who’ve erred will be too afraid to acknowledge their shortcomings and take responsibility for their mistakes. Nothing will change, progress will stall. We need to establish a culture that supports change and personal evolution. The men featured this month demonstrate how powerful that mindset can be.
Take this month’s cover man, Cody Simpson, a true master of reinvention and personal growth. Simpson, the original Australian YouTube superstar, has emerged from his own metamorphosis to become an Olympian in the making. A budding polymath, Simpson continues to explore new horizons, learning and growing along the way.
We also draw inspiration from a big screen icon, Daniel Craig, who has evolved over 17 years on Her Majesty’s Secret Service, from a spritely, fresh-faced 007, to battle-hardened, world-weary superspy on his final mission. Craig is fiercer than ever in this year’s No Time To Die, proving adaptation not only helps you endure, but conquer.
It’s true that the only constant in life is change, so why not embrace it? Whether that be a transformation to your style (p50), diet (p104), body (p126), habits (p32) or mind (p39), there’s plenty in this magazine issue to sink your teeth into – provided they don’t fall out overnight.
