70 years our servant We were very moved by the events, surrounding the Queen’s accession to the throne 701 years ago, and especially by her recent letter to the nation:

‘As we mark this anniversary, it gives me pleasure to renew to you the pledge I gave in 1947 that my life will always be devoted to your service. An1d so as I look forward to continuing to serve you with all my heart, I hope this Jubilee will bring together familiesand friends, neighbours and communities 1 after some difficult times for s0 many of us – in order to enjoy the celebrations and to reflect on the posi’tive developments in our’ day-to-day lives that have so happ1Jy· coincided with my reign.
Your Servant
Elizabeth R.’

What struck us most about the Queen’s note was that comment at the end, written in her own hand, of ‘Your Servant1 – somehow that seemed e.xactly right … that is how she thinks of herself and how she acts. The opposite of entitlement.
We intend to be right here in our region celebrating, thanking the Queen for her servi1ce and reflecting on the dramatic improvements in lifestyle, and social inclusivity that have taken place since the early 195,0s.
Here’s to feelings ,of spring.
