Light & Sound International – September 2021

With the PLASA Show set to return to Olympia London next month (5-7 September), there’s a definite buzz in the industry about us all finally having the opportunity to re-connect in person – whether that’s at PLASA, or at work on live events that have finally been able to resume here in the UK ( . . . for the most part, ‘pingdemic’ aside!).
It’s been a very long two years since the last PLASA Show in 2019 and I think it’s safe to say we all now realise how important events such as tradeshows are to maintaining a sense of community that Zoom calls just can’t replicate. Sure, things might be a little different at the show this year – with proof of negative COVID tests and double vaccination required to enter, and many exhibitors no doubt scaling back their usual ambitious stand designs to compensate for revenue lost during consecutive lockdowns, but we’re of no doubt that this will be a PLASA Show to remember!
Light & Sound International magazine is also delighted to be powering the return of the Innovation Awards, which recognise true advances in product development. Independently judged on site at the PLASA Show, the winners will be announced on 6 September. For a sneak peek at the early nominees, and to help you plan your visit to the show, our preview on pages 42-49 rounds-up just some of the highlights and product innovations you can expect to see on the showfloor.
On the subject of returning to work, for Cue sound, go lights, roll video: action, Steve Moles talks to three live events professionals about navigating their way through the pandemic and coming out the other side (pages 54-58).
Also inside, Kate Lyon speaks to the crew and creatives behind Coldplay’s recent Big Weekend gig at Whitby Abbey for this month’s cover story (pages 34-38); Rob Halliday discovers how the Grange Festival team developed a new technique to fill the orchestra pit with ‘live’ sound despite social distancing challenges (pages 20-21); we visit the newly-revamped Stockton Globe (pages 22-23); and report on the transfer of immersive art exhibition Beyond The Road from London to Seoul (pages 28-29). Plus, Phil Ward charts the impressive 50-year history of British loudspeaker manufacturer, Martin Audio (pages 62-68).
There’s a trio of technical productreviews for you to enjoy this month too, as Rob Halliday gets to grips with the new Diamond 9 lighting and visualisation console from Avolites (pages 70-73), Richard Cadena takes a closer look at Obsidian’s Netron data distribution system (pages 74-75), and Simon Allen puts the new Evolution Wireless Digital system from Sennheiser through its paces (pages 78-81).
Plus, of course, all your regular favourites and more. Enjoy – and hopefully we’ll see many of you at the PLASA Show! I
