Heading to school or college in the next few weeks? Get an iPad

When I went to college, and later university, iPads didn’t exist. If they had I think it would have been revolutionary for my education. Instead of having to read real books, as well as lug them about everywhere (can you imagine?), I could have just looked everything up on my iPad, but then, the World Wide Web didn’t exist either, so perhaps it wouldn’t have been that great…
For students today an iPad is almost the perfect device, especially when coupled with a Bluetooth keyboard. You can use it for research, for writing essays and for relaxing with movies, music and games. It’s everything you need in one, lightweight device. But which one to get? The list of iPads that Apple sells isn’t massive, but there’s enough choice that you can feel a bit lost when you start to decide which iPad will suit you best. Take a look at our feature starting on page 4 this issue for the ultimate guide to iPads for students.
This issue we’ve also gone hands-on with the iPadOS 17 beta and put it through its paces. The good news is that multitasking, always the iPad’s weak point, has improved and we love the ability to customise the lock screen.
Finally, this issue we’ve put a selection of AirPod alternatives through their paces. See what we thought of the Nothing Ear 2 and others, starting on page 34.
