HELLO and welcome to the latest issue of Hornby Magazine – and what an issue it is! Hornby’s 2022 catalogue has been revealed, we have a full review of the Hornby ‘W1’ 4-6-4, Heljan has revealed its new plans for 2022… and we’ve completed another layout project.
The Hornby catalogue launch is a fixture of the annual calendar that we all look forward to and there is plenty to excite modellers in the year ahead with a number of steam and diesel projects being announced. Some will be familiar in model form – like the all-new ‘Black Five’ and HST models – while others have never been seen before including the unique LMS ‘Turbomotive.
However, it is technology that has really caught our eye with Hornby as the manufacturer set out its stall to enhance its model offering with new features. Chief amongst these is a brand new steam generator for Hornby’s own models connected to its own DCC sound decoders allowing modellers to not only gain the advantage of sound, but also add that extra strand of realism through the introduction of factory installed smoke units. This is a compelling addition to Hornby’s steam locomotives, but it doesn’t end there.
The all-new ‘Black Five’ is one of the models to watch in our view as this looks set to offer one of the highest – if not the highest – specification steam locomotives Hornby has ever made. Working lamps, firebox flicker, a 21-pin decoder socket and a version with a smoke generator are all on the cards. And if that wasn’t enough, there will even be a Caprotti valve gear ‘Black Five’. Modern image hasn’t been forgotten either as the upgraded HST, which was alluded to in the recent Hornby: A Model World TV series, is set to be feature-packed too.
It is also worth mentioning manufacturing. The past year has presented new challenges to all model manufacturers with the disruption of raw material supplies, rising shipping costs as well as shortages of power to the factories which make our models. Hornby reassured us during its press launch that it was doing everything it can to reduce the impact these problems pose to bring us the exciting models we all want to see on our layouts.
Beyond the Hornby range we have a jampacked issue filled with stunning layouts, modelling guides, the latest product reviews and the second part of our narrow gauge layout build. For those who want more (and who doesn’t?) we always have more videos and features online at www.keymodelworld. com for you to sink your teeth into including a full Hornby 2022 range launch video and the second part of our narrow gauge build.
Happy modelling!
