As far as I’m concerned, when it comes to superpowers, not much beats a good night’s sleep. The kind where you wake up feeling like you could take on anything. Conversely, just a few nights of sleeping badly can leave me feeling desperate – jet lagged and at war with my body, as my brain whirrs away and refuses to rest. Luckily, for me, those nights are in the minority these days – although it wasn’t always the case: when my teenagers were babies, I sleepwalked through my days and lay awake in bed at night.
Now, practising what I preach when it comes to eating healthily, getting outside, and sticking more or less to a routine works for my sleep most days – although I’m aware this is not the case for everyone. Commentators tell us we are in the middle of a sleep epidemic, caused by being ‘always-on’, and there is no shortage of content to help us ‘fix’ our sleep problems. As always, we’ve tried to come at this topic from a different angle and offer you some new solutions. Our sleep special, from magazine page 16, looks at the newest thinking, and our experts explain ways to improve your sleep that you may not have tried before. I hope it works for you – please let me know.
