Master your motivation with Health & Fitness UK Magazine

Recently, I discovered a quote that spoke volumes to me: ‘Motivation is what gets you started; habit is what keeps you going’. It conveys why it’s been so hard or so many of us to truly attack an exercise goal during the recent lockdowns – because without our regular routines (whether going to the gym after work, exercising while the kids are at school, or heading to a weekend sports club), keeping fit has become less habitual and easier to swerve. Indeed, a 2021 study from the university College London reports that two-fifths of us are doing less
activity now than during the first lockdown last spring. Unsurprisingly, Dr Rangan Chatterjee, GP and host of the Feel Better Live More podcast, rates morning routines as even more important during this Covid era. Discover how to rebuild your daily ritual for greater fitness mojo on page 66.
That’s not to say that you should get stuck in a routine rut. The plus side to having your normal schedule scuppered is that it gives you a chance to uncover new habits, and running has provided great refuge for many while restrictions have been in place. Keep the momentum going by trying running coach Wendy Rumble’s 5K training plan on page 37, then flip to page 44 to read about how to support your runs with strength training. You can also drool over the latest trainers on page 40, plus learn how to measure the fit of your running bra from the comfort of your home, on page 86.
Of course, while plenty of us work out to improve body fitness, we’re increasingly exercising to protect our mental health. I’ve long cited exercise as integral to my happiness levels, creative energy and sleep quality. As this month’s cover model Lisa Lanceford points out (on page 16), being physically stronger can often make you feel mentally stronger. Turn to our Train Handbook on page 75 to try Lanceford’s exclusive workouts, and tune in to our next magazine issue (May) for the second part of her plan.
As we navigate spring, there’s never been a greater incentive to take care of our mental and physical wellbeing. This issue is packed with inspiration to support you on your journey to optimum health.
Yours in fitness,
‘Master your motivation’
