It has, arguably, been a while since we’ve seen any revolutionary leaps forward in drum production. The invention of electronic drum machines was a huge change in the latter half of the last century, followed by the rise of affordable hardware sampling, and then even more accessible software variants on both. However, for much of the last two decades, advances have been more subtle – increasingly complex beat sequencers, more advanced drum effects, smaller and cheaper drum machines.
With the dawn of AI and other ‘smart’ production tools, we could be on the cusp of another major leap forward, in all forms of electronic production, although beatmaking in particular. It’s this, along with a host of more immediately usable techniques, that we’ll be exploring in this issue’s cover feature.
