Welcome at Diabetes Self Management Magazine Fall 2023 Issue

Autumn leaves and pumpkins, please! The fall season is a time of transitions—trees are turning, kids are heading back to school, adults are easing out of summer vacation mode, and Daylight Saving Time is coming to an end. Between the shorter hours of sunlight and all the other changes the season brings, fatigue is a common concern at this time of year. Add diabetes and related health conditions to the mix, and it’s a perfect storm for low energy. Fortunately, although fatigue is a serious issue, there are ways to combat it. Read “Fighting Fatigue” (page 26) for tips to tackle that tired feeling.
Having difficulty sleeping is undoubtedly a major contributor to fatigue, and if you’re dealing with restless legs syndrome, you may find yourself tossing and turning night after night. This sleep disorder can cause unpleasant or strange sensations in the legs, leading to an uncontrollable urge to move them when sitting or lying down. And what’s more, the prevalence of this condition is higher in people who have diabetes. Find out about symptoms, risk factors, causes, management, and more in “What to Know About Restless Legs Syndrome” (page 34). Being tired can, in turn, cause cravings for a variety of junk foods, and there is certainly no shortage of these available as the weather turns colder. But eating with attention and awareness can help you better understand your body’s signals and reduce the urge to turn to unhealthy comfort foods. Visit “Curbing Your Cravings” (page 28) to learn about evidence-based strategies for eating mindfully.
And remember, whether perusing your local farmers market or going for a hike or stroll in the refreshing autumn air, be sure to enjoy the bounty and beauty that this time of year offers. Here’s to a fabulous fall!
All the best
