As I sat down to write this letter in 2020, I, like many of us, was filled with excitement for the Christmas ahead. Little did I know, not long after, lockdowns would be announced across the country and many of us would experience one of the strangest festive periods on record, rather than the comfort and nostalgia of the family-filled break we expected. If the past two years have taught us anything, it’s to take nothing for granted.
So, this issue, we’re waving goodbye to 2021 and saying ‘hell yeah’ to 2022 and the fresh start we hope it will bring. Something our cover star Khloé Kardashian knows first-hand. From shooting the final scenes of KUWTK and celebrating the five-year anniversary of her denim brand Good American, to filming the family’s next project, she opens up about her rollercoaster year. And few people are betterplaced than one of the world’s biggest influencers and reality TV stars to talk about setting healthy boundaries that evolve over time: ‘You’re allowed to change what you’re comfortable with.’ [Note to self: make ‘set healthy boundaries that reflect my changing needs’ a New Year’s resolution.]
In fact, transformation is a common thread in this issue, as one self-professed introvert investigates whether it’s possible to become an extrovert (and whether she
actually wants to), while Paula Akpan looks at the changing shape of the influencer industry and how our relationship with social media stars is shifting. Thinking about quitting drinking (p46), moving jobs (p68) or sorting out your finances (p66)? We’ve got you covered. Or if the biggest change you’re after is a new and improved self-care routine, check out our 2021 Beauty Awards on p116, where we’ve reviewed hundreds of products to bring you only the best.
Whatever your Christmas looks like this year, I hope it’s filled with love, rest and relaxation. And as you look to the new year ahead, remember: change can be powerful and liberating, but the only person you should ever change for is yourself.
