Welcome at Computer Music Magazine Issue 325, October 2023

Preparing tracks for release is a process that some might consider to be a less creative part of music production. But, attaining the right amount of loudness while still keeping a sense of dynamic range across our track’s frequency spectrum requires us to make some big decisions about our music. While the mastering process is now no longer quite the ‘dark art’ that it was once perceived to be back when the only route to achieving a solid final product was to entrust your mix to a dedicated expert, it’s often still quite a confusing journey. The process demands that we detach ourselves from the music we’ve spent so long making, and think critically about how to shape it into an audio product for the ears of listeners. In our cover feature this issue, we tackle mastering with a self-sufficient, in-the-box mastering mindset, and shed light on some of the most effective tools, strategies and approaches to make our tracks really pump.
We were delighted to get to spend some time with modern house music superstar Chris Lake this issue, a former reader of this very magazine and now a globally renowned, Coachella-smashing DJ and electronic music monolith. Read our in-depth interview with Chris from p46 and learn why he swears by simple laptop speakers as the ultimate track-testing listening choice. As ever, with this issue we’re bringing you an exclusive piece of software, this time courtesy of Caelum Audio. Choric Quartet is a 4-voice chorus plugin, which you can download now and follow our tutorial on p82 to learn how to use. I hope you enjoy this packed issue, and, like Chris Lake, use that knowledge to carve a musicpacked future.
