Welcome at Classic Pop Magazine September-October 2023 Issue

A cross his illustrious back catalogue, Prince may have released more hard-hitting studio albums (Sign O’ The Times), or even more grandiose (Purple Rain) – but did he ever create anything as downright entertaining front-to-back as Diamonds And Pearls?
The Purple One’s 1991 pop masterpiece has always been my personal favourite of his, instantly transporting me back to a shared house at uni where the record battled for supremacy on our stereo that year alongside Nevermind, Blue Lines and Screamadelica. So the news that Prince’s team are preparing another of their stunning boxsets specifically for Diamonds And Pearls is hugely exciting.
Its run of six singles were fantastic, helping the parent album to sales of six million and counting. From bangers to ballads and jazzy numbers, Diamonds And Pearls has it all. This magazine issue, we meet the essential players behind the new deluxe boxset, including key members of the New Power Generation.
As we hear in our world exclusive cover feature, when people call Prince a control freak for his singular artistic vision, that does him a disservice. He could have put together a new band packed with the most famous musicians on the planet, but such was his love of Minneapolis that he chose to create the New Power Generation from players in his hometown. And their contributions should not be underestimated. From the stunning vocals of Rosie Gaines to the raps of Tony M and drumming of Michael Bland, Diamonds And Pearls just wouldn’t be the same without any of them. This was, after all, the album where ‘Prince went hip-hop’ – and it might have been seen as an artistic risk if the material and performances from all involved weren’t so uniformly brilliant.
Elsewhere this issue, we have more good news to share. We catch up with synth-pop icons Soft Cell who are back with a raft of new releases, including two additions to their *Happiness Not Included album and an extraordinary boxset of debut LP
Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret. Now thankfully on the road to recovery, Dave Ball also reveals all about the horrific accident that temporarily left him in an induced coma.
Finally, the most eagerly-anticipated new
studio album of 2023 is with us – and it’s a cracker. We talk to the songwriting team behind Kylie’s Tension, recorded during last year’s sweltering summer and living up to its steamy inspiration. We’re saying it’s the equal of Light Years and Body Language …
