Welcome at Classic Boat Magazine July 2023 Issue

We have two of our recent award winners in this issue. I fear it’s becoming a bit of a trope to keep saying this – we’re always battering on about J-Class yachts and clinker dinghies sharing the same stage after all – but they couldn’t be more different. One, Lady Min, is a forgotten century-old racing yacht found in a barn and restored for the great grandson of the original designer and builder. The other, Shadow, was designed two years ago and built to the latest methods. It’s a twin-waterjet planing weekender that, bar a software upgrade and a change in COLREGS, will be able to make her way from port to port without a soul on board. The unifying factor is the stuff they are made of – wood.
Lady Min is a basket of frames with planks screwed on, whereas Shadow is built the modern way, with thinner planks glued at opposing angles to form a stiff shell. That’s simplifying things of course, but it’s amazing how little building in wood has changed over the years. And what a joy it is to know that building in wood is as viable a method of boatbuilding as it has ever been.
Boats like Lady Min can be rebuilt for all eternity and vessels like Shadow rival any hull material for longevity.
