You can’t have helped but notice the news that the supermarkets have been accused of profiteering from customers buying petrol from them recently. After what feels like a tidal wave of news stories about politicians and organisations being dishonest and/or lining their pockets, it’s almost like water off a duck’s back these days… almost as if one expects it! Of course, there are those who would say you shouldn’t buy fuel from supermarkets anyway because of the inferior quality of the product. I’m not convinced by that, but having said that, I do buy the premium fuel from one big brand petrol retailer because of its supposed zero-ethanol content – although I’ve since read that this isn’t guaranteed in Scotland, Wales and the north of England. A call to the retailer’s marketing department revealed an inability to define the ‘north of England’… apparently it’s anywhere north of the Midlands… very scientific!
On a happier note, the Kingstown Shipping Car of the Year is picking up steam and we have two heat winners to reveal to you in this issue which were selected at the Beaulieu Custom and American Show and the recent Classic American Magazine Stars & Stripes Show at Tatton Park, Cheshire. This month we feature a couple of cars where the owners have literally rebuilt them into the vehicles they wanted them to be, rather than keeping them totally stock as they left the factory.
It’s an outlook that seems to be gaining traction in the American car world in this country, which can manifest itself in everything from a set of aftermarket wheels to the all-out recreating of a totally new and interesting vehicle. Both the Dodge Coronet and the Econoline van in this issue are good examples of this and even the Hudson, with its Aussie-sourced bodywork, is one too.
