WELCOME! IF YOU’VE FOUND YOURSELF HERE,
you’re experiencing a piece of the magazine that only exists in the print edition and, you must forgive me for being a bit sentimental, because this is the 40th issue of Cannabis Now. Through the years we’ve had a lot of amazing people and plants grace these pages. \1Ve’ve shared so many important stories and smoked so much incredible herb. In this particular space, we’ve also had a lot of great ca1mabis editors share their vision for what makes this magazine so special.
We’ve always had a lot of hutzpah and a whole lot of heart when it comes to making Ca1mabis Now. When I started my time here in 2013, the magazine’s first editor was at the helm: Jeremy Daw, a Harvard graduate with a phenomenal ability to predict the future of the cannabis industry by acutely understanding its past. Jeremy and I used to share story concepts over cups of coffee and bowls of bud. His eyes would absolutely t-vinkle as we shot ideas back and forth. Washington and Colorado had just come into the legal marketplace. Times of immense change were upon us.
Next, Angela Bacca, one of the most respected investigative journalists working on the cannabis beat, took the reins. Angela presented articles about trailblazers reshaping the industry and we honed in our focus on amplifying marginalized voices. Checking in from her home office in the very prohibitionist state of Utah, Angela once pulled her bong out from the side of the frame during a SJ…–ype meeting and I’ll love her forever for that. Angela also wrote one of the smartest celebrity interviews I have ever read, which focused on Tommy Chang’s history as a political prisoner of the drug war, rather than just his comedic chops.
Dave Carpenter’s knack for storytelling helped propel the pdf magazine into its next stage. Dave has a very special ability to use his knowledge about growing cannabis and write about it in a way that makes it universally understandable. \1Vith Dave, Cannabis Now looked at what it means to stabilize genetics and examined the potential for regulating harmful things like pesticides. Dave boosted our rep by talking with songwriting musician Melissa Etheridge about her cannabis activism.
Then David Downs exploded onto these pages with both an immensely engaging writing style and an innate knack for making things pop. With David, who was already a respected longtime cannabis columnist and author, we put on our polish. I don’t know if we can ever beat putting #treatyoself on the cover and I still remember the details about the allcream tailored Rag & Bone suit Wi.z Khalifa wore to the Met Gala the year David interviewed him because of the captivating article he wrote.
As for myself, I’ve occupied this particular place on the page for a while and I’m always thrilled by those of you who reach out and let me know you’re reading along. Marijuana media is only one shining tricl1ome on the frosty nug of beneficial things this plant has to offer. Thank you for being here now and for continuing on with us as we blossom in full. *
