After six months of reporting on the global pandemic,we felt it was time for something different:welcome to the feelgood issue. Put a bre won, put your feet up and enjoy some uplifting long-reads. Up first there’s the hugely ambitious, mega project to test and analyse hundreds of thousands of pet dogs in the US to discover what makes some people age faster than others (p54). It might sound like an odd way to look at human ageing, but the fact that our four-legged companions share our lifestyles, our homes and sometimes even our diets means that the study will give us an unprecedented look at the changes we can all make to age well. And of course, it might just help a few good boys and girls enjoy a little more time with their humans too.
Over on p74,we’re diving into the research of the benefits of cold water swimming. Thousands of swimmers up and down the country – and even some on our team– swear that there’s nothing better for your mood or your health than a quick dip in some icy water, and now some scientists think they might be onto something. Alternatively, if you want to enjoy something out-of-this world, head to p33 where we’ve taken a look at the latest paper from NASA on the feasibility of warp drive.
And finally, if you haven’t listened to our podcast before –what are you waiting for!? Head over to your favourite podcast app and search for Science Focus. This month,we’ve released a brilliant interview with behavioural scientist Dr Pragya Agarwal about racial bias, and an exclusive six-part mini-series with Prof Jim-Al-Khalili called Everything
You Wanted To Know About… Physics. Enjoy!
