What is your idea of comfort food? Ask five people and you’ll probably get a different answer from each of them. For me, comfort food tends to be something that suits the season. For instance, in winter, a hot, melty casserole or a steaming bowl of vegie soup really hits the spot. Whereas, in the summer heat,
I feel lulled by juicy tropical fruits with creamy gelato, or buttery corn straight off the cob. Nostalgic dishes also soothe the soul, especially the favourites our mothers served up during childhood. In my case it was warm fruit sponge for dessert (see p76 for a healthier rendition), or Sunday roast shared with the whole family at lunchtime.
Food preferences can be incredibly meaning-laden when you start to examine them. What we like to eat, and under what circumstances, has links to our values, lifestyle, memories, traditions and culture — it’s so much more than just a means to an end. If you’re trying to live a healthier life, the magic really starts to happen when what brings you pleasure also happens to be good for you. Goals! Hopefully we dished up a bit of that winning combination for you in this issue. Bon appétit!
