The enigma of life has captivated the human mind for centuries. Life presents an intricate tapestry of complexity, leaving us awestruck by its beauty and bewildered by its elusive nature. Throughout history, philosophers and scientists have grappled with the enigmas of the universe. Artists embrace the mystery of life as an invitation to explore and marvel at the complexity surrounding us.
In this issue of Artdoc Photography Magazine, a photo basel special, we bring photographers who have cultivated a sense of wonder and curiosity, combining it with a critical position towards art history, environment, and politics. Zak van Biljon makes us conscious of the biological function of nature. He used a near-infrared technique, which reverses the colours in his landscapes. The greens turn into reddish colours. He uses his new approach to relate to nature again. Elina Brotherus uses herself as the vehicle for her portfolio of artworks, creating an enigmatic mystery of hidden meanings and simultaneously using the
concept as a joyful playground. The portraits of Michal Chelbin are aesthetic and mysterious. The gazes of the young people invite the spectator to delve into the picture, revealing an uncanny psychological depth.
Furthermore, we feature seven promising photographers who depicted their visual investigations in many unknown aspects of life. Finally, in our highlights of the online exhibition Enigma of Life, Artdoc collected photographers’ work, who all worked on the theme of wonders, miracles, and riddles. Photography is the most direct art form to express our ambiguous relation to the wondrous world around us.
