Tablets are back! After a five year slump that began in earnest in 2015, tablet sales are surging and the last couple of years have shown that these unique devices are verymuch back in vogue again. Part of this can be attributed to Apple. The company never gave up on this form-factor, and when the iPad Pro 12.9-inch first appeared it
opened up a new world of portable power for traditional laptop users. Tablets are a nice travelling companion, and you can have a very generous amount of screen real estate in a light and compact package. Battery life for tablets also tends to out-class laptops, and with the addition of a snap-on keyboard you’re ready to roll with almost any task.
On the flipside, these keyboards that transform a tablet’s useability are still ridiculously expensive, often costing hundreds of dollars. Still, they’re what we’d consider optional for most people, with on-screen keyboards usually good enough for anything but an arduously long writing session.
Of course, not everyone needs the size and power of a high-end tablet. For around $400 you can pick up a perfectly useable device that fits a multitude of user needs. That could well be web surfing while you’re sitting on the couch, taking notes in a meeting or enjoying BYO entertainment on a long f light. Kids love tablet’s too, and it is not a bad thing to say they can be a pretty good babysitter.
If you haven’t recently enjoyed the distinct and pleasant advantages a tablet offers over a laptop, it’s time to reconsider. I use both, they each have their jobs they do best. Ands lastly, an apology, in the previous issue I wrote here that APC magazine went onsale on Christmas day. It did not, it actually went onsale on January 5th. I’d misread our schedule and told you all the wrong date, and many subscribers emailed to let me know their issue came late when it arrived in January. My bad! Sorry!
