Most people look forward to the warmer months of the year. Except for the oft-oppressive heat, invasions on the ground and in the air from insect pests, and the suffocating humidity, summer gives us the chance to get outside and stretch our legs after being cooped up indoors since last fall. The warmer weather also signals an increase in the occurrence of large gatherings for a variety of social, political and other causes. Many Americans take the opportunity to join their voices with like-minded folks to peacefully express their concerns, needs and wants in
the hope that they can influence our leaders and others. Typically, those who disagree with those opinions gather to counter those efforts without incident; but, in some cases, violence ensues. While we can’t always see trouble coming, we usually do have several opportunities to avoid it when scenarios with a greater potential for disorder arise. This month’s
cover story by Brian M. Morris (see page 36) provides us with some solid advice and insight learned during serious situations he encountered while on active duty as a U.S.
Army Special Forces combatant. Brian’s article covers several aspects of this topic that will enable you to do a better job of predicting when large gatherings might turn dangerous. Reminding us of the basic roots for many of these street conflicts gives us the ability to make better decisions as we get out and about, now and in the future.
At the other end of this month’s content spectrum is an interesting article written by Christopher Nyerges about Euell Gibbons. Our older readers will remember Gibbons as the wild food expert who told us in 1970s television commercials that Post Grape Nuts cereal reminded him of wild hickory nuts. Younger readers have probably heard of this self-reliance pioneer as well. Gibbons devoted much of his life to learning, writing and teaching about the availability of plentiful and nutritious food in the wild. He wrote numerous books and articles and became so widely known that he was even parodied and roasted for what some considered a strange way to put food on his table. Christopher met Gibbons, who was an inspiration and influence for his own writing and teaching about natural foods, just a few years before Gibbons’ death in 1975. He shares some of the lessons and insights he learned and reminds us that there are many food options waiting to
be found all around us, as long as we make the effort to study our environment. This issue also marks the beginning of a new feature from Christopher about edible and otherwise useful plants. Each month, in “Prepper Plant Advisor” (see page 86), he will share with us how to identify and use a plant that is commonly found in many areas of the country. This section will include photos and descriptions of the plants and how to find them, as well as advice for processing each plant for food or to serve other needs around your home or homestead. This month’s plant is
Lambsquarters. Another particularly timely article, because summer’s heat increases the threat of fire, is from Dana Benner. Normally, when we talk about fire, it relates to starting a fire, not preventing one. As we’ve all seen, particularly over the last couple of years, fire is a heartless and relentless force of nature that is difficult to contain at the best
of times. As with so many subjects we cover, prevention is key for ensuring you don’t have to face the flames in or around your home. We hope you’ll enjoy the rest of the articles in this issue.
