Editor’s Note
IT’S MAY-one of my favorite months of the year. The spring flowers have bloomed and, as you may recall from our last issue, it’s quite busy at my bird feeder. What excites me most, though, is the season just around the corner.
I know technically the first day is in June, but for me (and many others), Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer.
By late May, the air has really warmed up here in the Northeast and I can almost feel the salty ocean mist on my face as I make plans for days at the beach over the next few months. Summer means setting up our annual lemonade stand and my kids swimming for hours. It also means the return of the deer looking for noshes and bees hovering over my garden.
And, most endearingly, my rabbit friend weaving in and out of the fence lining my backyard. I’m not sure how old he is; we haven’t even lived here two years. But I recognize the distinctive black marking on his fluff y white tail as he pauses to sit up on his hind legs and take a look around the yard. Our eyes occasionally meet, and I wonder what he’s thinking. Perhaps he’s waiting for me to let the dog out. Charlie will never catch him. That doesn’t stop him from trying every time Rabbit pops into sight. The chase is amusing, mostly because Charlie comes sulking back with a look that says, “Missed him again.”
Rabbits are said to symbolize a variety of things—both positive and negative—but their association with luck stays with me. Maybe that’s why I like seeing my friend— not so much that I’m hoping he’ll bring me luck but because he reminds me of how lucky I am. Lucky to feel the sun on my face. Lucky to be able to sit on my porch and watch God’s creatures come and go. Thank you, Lord, for this warmth and this view. And for Rabbit too.
