Vintage Rock – December-January 2022

When you talk about the most iconic figures in music over the past 70 years, Johnny Cash has to be front and centre in any conversation. Such was the depth of his contribution to popular music over the course of six decades across multiple styles, Cash is pretty much a genre in and of himself. If ever a performer deserved the epithet ‘charisma beacon’, it was Johnny – you just couldn’t take your eyes off the singer whenever he stepped on to the stage.
For our latest cover feature, we’re rewinding the clock to his earliest days on Sun Records, where he cut his most rockin’ material. That ‘boom-chicka-boom’ signature bare-bones sound was really all about providing an urgent framework for his sonorous baritone. Cash’s charisma did the rest. Elsewhere this issue, we welcome back another legendary figure to the pages of Vintage Rock for an exclusive interview. Dion DiMucci is in the form of his life. After last year’s Blues With Friends, he’s followed it with yet another star-studded studio album, Stomping
Ground. Attracting the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton and Billy F Gibbons proves just how highly regarded Dion remains among the world’s biggest rock stars. Alongside some of our favourite veteran artists, such as Johnny Carroll, Sonny Burgess and Charlie Gracie, who all feature in the following pages, read on for interviews with the dynamic multi-instrumentalist Bailey Dee and the feisty front woman of Screamin’ Rebel Angels, Laura Palmer.
And as a nod to the ensuing festivities that is guaranteed to get you in the mood, we’ve rounded up our 20 essential cheese-free Yuletide rock’n’roll songs.
That just leaves me to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.
Enjoy the issue!
