Welcome Total Guitar Magazine April 2021
Technically, I’ve never actually owned a Telecaster. I did have a Squier Tele on loan from the mag a few years back, I once built a T-style guitar from a kit (though not 100 per cent successfully!), and I did pick up a used G&L ASAT Classic early last year. Still, I do love Fender’s original solid-body electric. The Tele might just be the ultimate rock rhythm machine. A guitar for hard riffing and punk-rock, whose workhorse simplicity means you can beat all hell out of it without worries of knocking a tremolo arm out of tune. Of course that’s just my own assessment – the Tele is a versatile beast, and countless players have made it their main squeeze since Fender’s original solidbody hit the streets over seven decades ago.
And that brings me on to this very issue of Total Guitar Magazine. To mark 70 years of the Telecaster, this month we’re looking at some of the most important T-style players of all time, from the legions of Tele-toting country stars to rock and blues icons. We’ve interviewed a raft of greats, including Johnny Marr, Francis Rossi, Jason Isbell and more, who talk about how they used Teles in their music – and you can pick up some technique tips too with our tab lessons.
Moving away from the Telecaster theme, Michael Schenker gives us his tips for becoming a better player. We catch up with Architects guitarists Josh Middleton and Adam Christianson who tell us about expanding their musical horizons on their most ambitious album to date. And Adrian Smith and Richie Kotzen tell us about their recent Smith/Kotzen collaboration album. Enjoy the magazine, and I’ll see you next month!
