Welcome at The Australian Women’s Weekly Food Magazine August 2021 Issue
I feel we are at a crossroads, as what we eat is having a huge impact on the environment, animal welfare and the health of our farming sector as we try to find a food system that can support our increasing appetites. Australians are facing more hunger, obesity and environmental degradation than ever before.
According to one of Australia’s leading food rescue organisations, FOOD BANK (foodbank.org.au) Australian households throw away 2.5 million tonnes of edible food each year – that equates to nearly 300 kilograms per person! It’s crazy to think that much of what we are buying in our trolleys ends up in the bin.
This magazine issue we’ve devoted some space to thinking about our food and where it comes from. We hope to arm you with the information you need to make considered choices when it comes to where to spend your weekly grocery budget and then inspire you with recipes to get you into the kitchen cooking up a storm and clever ideas to help prevent food waste. Whether it is looking at where your meat, dairy or seafood comes from or researching what the labels actually mean, we have the questions you need to ask to put you firmly on the journey to connecting to the story behind your food. To balance out the conversation, we also find joy in making pies and pastries, celebrate the apple season, and create healthy loaf cakes – plus there’s loads of inspiration for avocados
beyond toast!
I do have some exciting news to share with you – our much loved magazine will be having a design refresh and change of name and it’s something you and I both love – it’s Cooking With The Australian Women’s Weekly. Until next month,
FRAN ABDALLAOUI,
EDITOR
