The call for entries for this year’s TALP Open Competition closed in April, following which the judges enjoyed getting together to select the works for exhibition in the galleries at Patchings Art Centre, which after a two-year enforced break due to Covid, we’re all thrilled to say will be opening on the fi rst day of the Patchings Festival on July 14. It also means that the judges will be able to meet again, in the galleries, in person on July 13, to review the exhibited paintings and select this year’s prize winners, who will also be announced on July 14.
Our TALP Open Competition exhibitions are sparkling highlights of the year for us all, when we enjoy the opportunity to celebrate and reward our talented, passionate artists. The resulting, individual The Artist and Leisure Painter category exhibitions, are the proverbial jewels in the crown of the Patchings Festival. If you haven’t already, why not pre-book your tickets and diarise the chance to enjoy viewing our exhibitions, meeting up with like-minded art lovers, and experiencing all the myriad inspirational demonstrations, workshops and activities on off er at this wonderful, family-organised, four-day festival of art and craft (www.patchingsartcentre.co.uk)
Talking of jewels, crowns and competitions, we are celebrating this momentous Platinum Jubilee year by inviting our artist readers to paint something positive about HM The Queen’s 70-year reign, and sending us your celebratory artworks, in any media. We invite you to let your imagination run free, and send in your creative interpretations of anything you feel represents what this incredible 70 years of service might mean to you. Amongst other key events throughout her life, you may wish to interpret scenes remembered from HM
The Queen’s Coronation, which in looking through our archives, we discovered The Artist celebrated in our June 1953 issue, with good wishes from the editor of the day: ‘The editor and staff of The Artist convey to Her Majesty their loyal greetings at this Coronation time and add the wish that her reign may be long, happy and glorious.’ I don’t suppose The Artist Magazine team at the time would have anticipated just how long that reign would turn out to be. We look forward to publishing the winning entries to our Platinum Jubilee competition in a future issue (visit bit.ly/BestOfBritishComp for details, prizes and how to enter). If you need any help in thinking of things to paint, I hope you will be inspired by Tim Gustard’s still-life demonstration in this issue, celebrating HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It’s a clever and humorous take on the theme.
