THE STORIES Behind the Screens at Shape USA Magazine
This selfie of me, above, was taken last December. I look kinda glam, right? My hair is blown out; my makeup is fresh; I’m wearing a fancy (fake) fur collar. The colored wall behind me makes the picture pop. I could have taken it at a fun restaurant or industry event or maybe on a ski vacation. I look relaxed and happy. In fact, it was taken at the Prospect Avenue subway station in Brooklyn, a much cleaner and more colorful place than it was before its recent renovation. I was feeling grateful that I have a nicer station to wait for the train in, so I took a picture.
Sometimes there’s a great moment or message behind an Instagram post; sometimes, none at all. The images we see on social media hardly tell a complete story. Well over a decade into this new world, many of us are still trying to figure out how (and why) digital snippets of other people’s lives fit into our own. I can answer the last part easily: when the people we follow (at least some of them) and interact with can offer wisdom, inspiration, and a unique point of view.
We’ve called this our influencer issue, and all the women you’ll meet offer more than a large following. They use their platforms to present a fresh perspective, teach new skills, and improve the lives of their digital tribes. In these pages you’ll hear from body-positivity poster girl Tess Holliday on owning the joy of sex at any size, cookbook author Ella Risbridger on cooking as a potent form of self-care, and Trail Sisters founder Gina Lucrezi on mobilizing the gear industry to help fuel the women’s outdoor movement. What all these people have in common is that they offer substance behind the scroll, substance that empowers and motivates.
That’s what I call the right kind of influence.
