Editor’s letter
Welcome to the latest issue of Scotland Magazine, where we’re embracing the colder weather and all the lovely things that come with it: wrapping up for a bracing walk to enjoy the scenery with fewer crowds, before getting warmed up by the fireside, preferably with a dram of your favourite single malt in hand.
If you’re a whisky fan, then you’ll love our piece on the ‘whisky isle’ of Islay (page 40), which has so much going for it besides its nine distilleries, not least its superb birdlife, which can be seen year-round.
If the call of the wild is stronger for you at this time of year, then read all about John Rooke Corbett magazine page 92 and some of the magnificent mountains he not only scaled but also mapped. Or be inspired by our piece on some of the most magical landscapes and landmarks worth visiting in the winter months (page 58).
Meanwhile, when it comes to cosy nights in, there really is no better option than a stay in your own fairytale castle (page 46), where kings and queens have gone before you.
Of course this time of year brings a very special day to Scotland: St Andrew’s Day. Read more about our patron saint (page 29) or, for more history, one of our writers investigates why the Romans never fully settled in Scotland (page 54).
If you’re more interested in your own personal history, then you’ll want to read our brand-new series on tracing your ancestry (page 36) – who knows, perhaps there’s a king or queen lurking in your family tree.
