Welcome at Prevention USA magazine May 2020 issue
NOT LONG AGO, MY FAMILY took a little weekend trip to visit my brother, which was all fun and games—until it suddenly wasn’t. We had a great time playing Clue (I remain undefeated, thank you very much), going to a women’s hockey game, and seeing how happy a hike made our dog.
But then my husband lost his wallet—and our car broke down. As we waited for AAA, feeling more than a little untethered with only one of us in possession of a driver’s license and credit card, I thought about this month’s anxiety story (page 46). True anxiety can make you feel as if your life is falling apart even when it isn’t, even when you’re not literally stranded on the side of the road.
But there’s help for whatever kind of trouble you’re in. An eagle-eyed girl found my husband’s wallet, and her gem of a dad tracked him down on Twitter and mailed it to our home. My brother spent his Sunday evening rescuing us, and my son made friends with a cat near where we broke down.
Support comes in many forms. If you need help in your life with anxiety (or, hey, a broken drivetrain), know that this is normal. There are some things you don’t have to handle alone—and when you are the one in a good place, find a way to be the support for others.
