Welcome at PLAY Magazine July 2023 Issue
Don’t get me wrong, I love to get behind the wheel of a digitized real car using the power of PlayStation (GT7 will never be uninstalled), but in a way isn’t that a fantasy of its own?
Throughout its history PlayStation has always invited me to experience new fantasies with eyes wide open, transporting me to new worlds.
While cover star Baldur’s Gate 3 (p44), which leads the way in this fantasy-packed magazine issue, isn’t exactly new, it’s nevertheless using its classic RPG foundations to bring something fresh to PS5. Building on the moment Dungeons & Dragons is having across media at the moment, it’s using the tried-and-true systems that blend the tabletop experience with Larian’s best-in-class emergent narrative chops to construct a new high point for Western RPGs.
Many ponds away, we take yet another look at Final Fantasy XVI (p34). This PS5 exclusive is heating up as if I frit himself were in charge, and we’ll be here to dive into every detail as
things build up to the game’s huge launch in June. Honkai: Star Rail (p28) is shaping up to be just as impressive and free to boot, with its science-fiction fantasy tale set to impress on PlayStation later in the year. We’ve not been as impressed by slick turn-based battles since Persona 5, and while some will find its ‘gacha’ live service system grating, the promise of new
party members teases tantalizing tactics.
Want your free live service games louder? Ubiosft’s XDefiant (p62) has Call Of Duty in its sights. So far it’s a mixed bag, but the mere fact it’s crossing barrels with big daddy COD is already making it one of this gen’s more interesting online battles. That’s if Wayfinder (p6) doesn’t eat both their lunches. Big moves in the reviews section too. Bombastic Star Wars action (p72)! A new Horizon story (p88)! A shiba inu (p80)! And huge summer news is right around the corner.
We hope you enjoy reading about it as much as we did putting it together!
