Welcome at PLAY Australia Magazine Issue 16 October 2023
At the time of writing, Baldur’s Gate 3 hasn’t released for PS5 – that’s scheduled to happen on September 6. But, safe in the knowledge that Larian’s ginormous CRPG supports cross saves, I’ve granted myself a little head start with the PC version.
Look, maybe the PS5 version of Baldur’s Gate 3 will be compromised in some critical way, but after 20 hours spent with the PC version (and yeah, I’ve been using a DualSense, all the better to simulate a console environment) I’m absolutely in love with this thing. I can’t see a better RPG releasing in 2023, let alone 2024, or 2025. Its scale and ambition is the kind of thing you tend to only see in the RPG space every generation or so. To be perfectly honest, it has ruined every other videogame for me. After this, I might retire.
What’s so good about it? Well, Baldur’s Gate 3 is an RPG that deeply rewards curiosity and experimentation. Imagine Skyrim, except with an even greater focus on choice and specialisation. Imagine Dishonored, except with dozens more ways to approach any given problem. Imagine Divinity Original Sin 2, except with dozens -nay hundreds – more gamechanging spells. Believe the hype: this is a monster of a videogame.
Making games like Baldur’s Gate 3 must be a monumentous task. So when I write that I wish every other RPG studio borrowed at least a few drops of inspiration from Larian, I don’t say it lightly. In Baldur’s Gate 3, if you come up with a bizarre, counterintuitive way to solve a problem, there’s every chance it will work. I can’t wait to get my hands on the PS5 version, and for you to, as well.
