Welcome at Parrots Magazine Issue 307, August 2023

With warm, fine weather and longer days in the northern hemisphere, there has been growing interest to take birds out for simply a spot of fresh air
or even, for the more adventurous, to free fly. Whatever the reason, there is always the risk of escape. So easy to not secure a cage or flight door, or a free flying bird decides to venture further afield. Whatever happens, there is great trauma for both birds and owners alike. In this issue, Eb Cravens continues his column on how to retrieve your escapees and gives some more excellent advice on what steps he has taken in the past for recovery.
Ever thought of keeping lorikeets? The extra care lories and lorikeets require seems to keep potential owners at bay, mainly because of their more specific feeding requirements. Yes, there
is more to consider, but the rewards are really worth it! Rosemary Low is one of the world’s leading authorities on lories and lorikeets and in her article, she writes about these charismatic psittacines. I remember very well at the time of visiting a large planted aviary in Florida, when the owner gave me a pot of treats and took me into the aviary. Within seconds, I was covered
in Rainbow Lorikeets with the owner and her husband finding it all quite hilarious. They are one of the most fun parrots I have ever come across and can fully understand Rosemary’s enthusiasm for them.
