Welcome at Home Cinema Choice Magazine August 2023 Issue

I recently helped a friend unbox and install a new 55in TV, and it reminded me there are things I take for granted that perhaps I shouldn’t, such as needing to agree to various T&Cs to set up a Google telly. Indeed, while providing a quick low-down on the functionality of my pal’s new flatscreen, I started to wonder if smart TVs have become almost too smart. My friend wasn’t particularly interested in voice control, or Bluetooth connectivity, and mainly wanted to know how to access BBC iPlayer. This turned out not to be available. ‘You can get that on the PlayStation,’ announced her 10-year-old son. Queue more HDMI input fiddling.
Finally, after lacing up the soundbar through eARC and being greeted by the sound of silence, I eventually remembered to dig around the set’s menus and activate HDMI CEC. Smart TVs can always make you look dumb…
