August 2023 marks the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington, the biggest civil rights march ever staged in America. The event is remembered for many reasons, not least for Martin Luther King Jr’s rousing ‘I Have Dream’ speech, an oration that is now widely viewed as one of the greatest of all time. But the struggle for racial equality in the US and the UK stretches back much further than the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, as we, with the help of expert Professor Adriane Lentz-Smith, explore in this month’s Essential Guide. Turn to page 23 to get started.
Elsewhere, we look at the entrepreneurial spirit of two young women who, in 1939, set up shop in London’s Bond Street and opened the doors to the Marriage Bureau, Britain’s first modern dating agency (page 47). We also investigate the often gruesome reality of Victorian and Edwardian surgery (page 54); examine what might have happened had Hitler’s Wehrmacht not invaded the Soviet Union (page 16); and uncover five incredible facts about the history of alcohol – from the 18th-century craze for gin, to the Neolithic origins of beer (page 20).
Plus, if you’re after some tips for making money the historical way, check out the next instalment of our Life Hacks from History column (page 15).
See you next month!
