WE’VE BEEN BLESSED with another new year, so I wanted to take a moment to talk about all the things I’m looking forward to in 2022. At the top of the list is good Southern food, and luckily, that usually involves family, too. Sundays are sacred in my household, and we always make time to gather around the table to enjoy a yummy supper together. Because it’s been chilly lately, I’m planning to whip up the Hearty VegetableBeef Stew and serve it with Rosemary-Cheese Bread and Sour Cream Mashed Potatoes (all on page 53).
Talk about comfort food, y’all. And if comfort food is what you’re after, there’s plenty of that in this issue. I’ve included some of my favorite ways to chickenfry—from shrimp and brisket to pork chops and portobello “steaks” (starting on page 55). Y’all know I also love to cook and bake with whatever produce is in season, so around this time
of year, I’m making the most of root vegetables like turnips, beets, and parsnips and bright winter citrus like Meyer lemons, grapefruits, and Cara Cara oranges. You can find the recipes for these by turning to pages 33–39 and pages 61–67.
Lastly, don’t forget to flip on over to page 41 tofind some scrumptious coffee cake recipes to eat alongside your favorite cup of joe. Michael loves the Skillet Peanut Butter Coffee Cakes (page 44), while I’m a big fan of the Raspberry-Buttermilk Coffee Cake (page 47). Let’s start off the new year right and get to cookin’!
