welcome at Canadian Geographic Magazine September-October 2023 issue
“CANADA HAS A VOLCANO?” I often find myself field-ing questions about what we’re working on at Canadian Geographic magazine, and this was the near-unanimous reaction to my description of “Sleeping giant” (page 32), our story about a limit-testing descent into a glaciovolcanic cave on B.C.’s Mount Meager.
I’m a terrible know-it-all, so I’ve delighted in telling everyone I can that, yes, Canada has a volcano — several, in fact — and yes, some of them are potentially active. Not only that, but there are people willing to rappel down icy chasms and risk exposure to toxic gases to help scientists unlock the secrets of these volcanoes and protect surrounding communities.
Christian Stenner, who led the Mount Meager expedi-tion, guest edited this issue of Canadian Geographic and shares more insights from the mountain in the infographic on page 30. We hope readers will feel amazed and inspired by the discoveries still waiting to be made beneath our feet — and on other worlds.
There’s lots more to learn in these pages. Two stories explore the meaning and importance of water to Indigenous communities, one through personal memoir (“With each stroke, a breath,” page 62), one through striking images of Fort Chipewyan, Alta., captured on medium-format film (“Lifeblood,” page 42). And if you, like millions of others, were both horrified and riveted by the smash hit HBO series The Last of Us, you’ll enjoy diving into the weird and wonder-ful world of fungi on page 50.
