British Archaeology – May-June 2021

Days are lengthening, parks and fields are greening and, as I write, we are hopeful that restrictions on our ability to travel, explore and meet people will begin to lift. There is a novel, and very welcome, sense of cautious hope.
During the long, intermittent lockdown, our contact with historic buildings and ancient remains has been severely curtailed. Museums and castles have been closed, stone circles and hill forts un walked. A research excavation planned for last year at W aun Mawn (our cover photo) was cancelled, and it was over a year ago that I, as editor, last visited a dig or an exhibition. Meanwhile, excavation by archaeologists working for the construction industry-with special provisions for social distancing-has continued apace across the UK, as some of the stories in this magazine testify.
It will be wonderful to see the world opening up again. Who knows, perhaps, at some gallery, ruin or dig, we’ll bump into each other.
