Bassmaster – July 2018

I HAVE DEVELOPED a love-hate relationship with this issue ever since it became the platform to announce “Bassmaster’s 100 Best Bass Lakes” rankings. And to be honest, it’s fairly difficult to identify the “love” part. After all, months of polling and research go into the creation of the list. Not that I’m opposed to work (unless you ask my wife about my penchant for avoiding dirty dishes); it’s just scouring the internet for recent tournament data is simply not my definition of a good time. And what’s more, the snide comments I receive from anglers after the list is published isn’t usually feel-good fodder. I get complaints that the rankings are wrong: “I can’t believe you put [fill in your home lake here] below [fill in the lake down the street]!” I get complaints about the rankings being right: “Thanks for telling everyone in the world about [fill in your favorite lake here]. I hope you can sleep at night knowing you destroyed the nation’s best fishery!”
