Inside Australian Men’s Fitness Magazine September 2020 Issue
At time of writing, gyms in the UK remain out of bounds and the home-workout bandwagon rolls on – only now you can get a short back and sides before your 10,000th set of press-ups. By now, though, hopefully working out from home is a less bewildering prospect than it was a few months ago. Personally, while my paltry pair of dumbbells and newly purchased resistance bands don’t offer the same variety as my local gym, I’ve fully come round to the time- and cost-saving benefits of frontroom fitness – not to mention the chance to focus on areas long neglected in favour of the same old weights-room habits.
However, as something almost, almost like normal begins to creep back in, this issue is about shifting some of the focus away from the home. You’ll still find bodyweight and minimal-equipment workouts, but as restrictions ease it feels possible, finally, to plan further ahead than the banana bread you’re baking this weekend.
That could mean setting a weekend aside to take on one of the many incredible long-distance walking routes the UK has to offer (p42), or
locking in a date next year to become a certified running tourist (p48). Equally, if you’re not yet able or willing to venture outside for long, it might simply mean taking up a new exercise or activity (‘anti-HIIT’ training, for example) to freshen up your fitness and add some much-needed variety to your well-worn routine (p30).
Elsewhere, you’ll find summer salad recipes, go-faster tips from the best sprinter in Tour de France history, and a deep dive into the unique discipline and demands of being a UK lifeguard (Baywatch beach runs included).
