At Ancient Origins Magazine, we’re proud to have reached our 50th issue packed with unique stories from the past. Delving into our ancient history is essential to truly understand the world around us, especially in today’s context where it is particularly necessary. To compile this special edition,
we’ve combed through all our past publications to bring you a selection of our finest content from 49 issues. Ancient Origins Magazine has consistently offered a comprehensive range of content, featuring interviews and news from field experts, articles on intriguing themes, discoveries and theories, delectable ancient recipes, and thrilling tales of historical heroes.
Past issues of the magazine have been published under an extensive variety of titles, including the most recent
“Murder in the Ancient World.” While some volumes have focused on specific ancient cultures including the Maya, Mesopotamia, China, India, Ireland, and Egypt, others have explored universal themes such as “Crime & Punishment,” “Sex and Love,” and “Lost Kingdoms.” We’ve also covered particular sites like Gobekli Tepe and investigated subjects such as cryptids, fashion, explorers, and even the depths of the underworld.
History continually unfolds with unexpected revelations. Our pages have been graced by eminent professionals and experts in their fields. Amongst them is maritime historian Professor David Abulafia, whom we interviewed about the human history of the oceans in our 15th issue, “Lost at Sea.” In issue 31-“Ancient Sports”-we had the privilege of speaking with Tom
“Pohaku” Stone, a champion of traditional surfing and the revival of he’e ho/ua mountain surfing, from his base camp in Hawaii. Additionally, evolutionary biologist Clive Finlayson joined us in issue 9-“Cataclysm: When Disaster Struck the Ancient World”-to shed light on decades of misperceptions related to our ancient cousins, the Neanderthals. We then caught up with Amr AI-Azm in issue 43-entitled “Stolen History”-
to discuss his work at ATHAR, a watchdog group combating the illegal trafficking of antiquities in the Middle East facilitated by social media platforms.
With a team composed of dedicated and passionate individuals from across the globe, determining which articles to feature proved to be a surprisingly daunting task. We’ve attempted to showcase an assortment of topics, styles and perspectives. We particularly wanted to spotlight some of the work by Charles Christian-author, columnist, and friend of Ancient Origins-who passed away unexpectedly in 2022. From discussions on the extinct dodo to the historic popularity of football, the results in this “50th Issue Special Edition” did not disappoint.
