Macro photography is undoubtably the most widely practiced form of underwater imaging. You don’t need fantastic water clarity like you would
for wide-angle. Actually, you can get away with visibility in the five- to tenfoot range. And, no matter where you happen to be on a dive – reef, wreck, under a bridge, pier or dock, or the open sea at night – you can always find something to photograph. In addition, macro is also the easiest form of underwater photography to do, especially when you have grasped the basics. In this issue, I asked one of the most-talented macro photographers in diving, Mike Bartick, to provide his recommendations for mastering the fundamental aspects of lighting, shutter speed and ISO to up your macro game.
In the travel arena for this issue, we have a few super features that includes tips for surviving your first liveaboard experience, diving in the Maldives part two, and my feature on Siladen Resort and Spa, which is located within the Bunaken Marine Park in northern Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Geographically, Indonesia is no small place. In fact, it is the world’s largest archipelagic nation, spanning 735,358 square miles, which is an area larger than the Continental US.
When I consider where I’ve traveled in Indonesia – Komodo, Bali, Wakatobi, Alor and now Bunaken, and where I hope to go next – Raja Ampat, Ambon, Timor-Leste and more – they are all just pin pricks on a regional map; an indication there is still so much out there to see.
