Welcome at Cosmopolitan UK Magazine June-July 2023 issue
One of my favourite things about shooting our cover features is getting to know the real people behind their fame. With the rose-tinted glasses of social media, and the real and metaphorical filters people put on their lives, it can be hard not to feel like a failure, drowning in a sea of perfection. But cover shoots are the most brilliant reminder that everyone is human, and rarely does anyone lead a totally charmed life. It might seem as if Charithra Chandran was blessed with overnight superstardom when she landed the role of Edwina Sharma in Bridgerton, but it wasn’t that simple. ‘I [thought], “Well, clearly it’s over,”’ Chandran sighs, recalling her wait for a callback that didn’t initially come. ‘I was like, “Oh, man! It’s such a good show. I would’ve loved to get that!”’ But, she says, ‘you can’t take these things personally’.
Fast-forward two years and she’s not only a Cosmopolitan Uk Magazine cover star, but, with Bridgerton under her belt, about to embark on some very exciting new projects. On p58, she talks about the discrimination and self-doubt that have come along with the fashion show front-rows and the lifelong friends she’s made.
After triumph at the 2022 Euros, the Lionesses make their bid to win the Women’s World Cup this July. But as Felicia Pennant found out on p74, it was a long, hard road to get there. She goes behind the scenes with Lioness legends past and present, to find out what went into lifting that trophy and what’s next for women’s football.
And, while it might feel like everyone else is off having a whale of a time frolicking in the sun (when it graces us with its presence), that isn’t the whole picture. ‘Sad girl summer’ isn’t just a trend, it’s a reality facing many of us. On p51, we dig into the loneliness that can strike during the warmer months – and what we can do about it.
Perfection doesn’t exist. Thank f*ck for that. Perfect is boring. It’s the challenges, complexities and struggles overcome along the way that often make moments of joy all the more beautiful.
